I'm not a fan of cinnamon so here's a recipe for homemade apple crumble without cinnamon. Apple crumble is the ultimate comfort food, serve it with a big dollop of cream or with custard like I like to have it.
INGREDIENTS
For the Filling 575g Bramley apple (3 medium apples), peeled, cored and cut into chunks 2 tbsp golden caster sugar
For the Crumble 175g plain flour 110g golden caster sugar 110g butter
Method
Preheat the oven to 190c/170 fan/gas 5. Peel, core and cut the apples and place in a bowl of water to prevent them going brown.
Crumble: Put the flour, butter and 110g sugar in a bowl and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like moist breadcrumbs. Alternatively, pulse in a processor.
Mix the apples with the 2 tbsp sugar and put in a baking dish at least 5cm deep.
Pour the crumb mix over the apples and use a spoon or fork to even out. Gently press the surface with the back of the fork so the crumble holds together and goes crisp
Place on a baking tray and put in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes, until the top is golden.
Alternatives There’s many ways of making crumble here’s some delicious alternatives to the recipe above: Mix the sugar with cinnamon before tossing the fruit in it to give a nice Autumnal aroma Use half apples, half blackberries and mix the sugar with cinnamon. If you like a ‘Tart’ crumble cut down the sugar so you can taste the cooking apple. Add some toasted oats, crushed toasted hazelnuts or ground almonds to the topping for an extra bit of flavour. Use a mix of apples, or some apples and blueberries or blackberries, tossed in some lemon juice and muscovado sugar rather than golden caster sugar. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon for extra flavour Change the ratio of crumble to fruit by adding 4 or 5 apples
